Sandy Strayer joined Henry County Public Schools in 1992 as a teacher at Bassett High School – a position she held for nine years. She served as assistant principal at Fieldale-Collinsville High School from 2001-2004 and was assistant principal at Bassett High School during the 2004-2005 school year following consolidation. In 2005, she became principal at Collinsville Primary School and remained there until 2010, when she became Director of Secondary Instruction and Director of CTE, a position she held for three years before moving into a role as Director of K-12 Instruction. Next, she moved into the role of Assistant Superintendent of Teaching and Learning. After three years, she changed positions to become the Assistant Superintendent for Operations. Currently, she serves as the Superintendent of Henry County Public Schools.
Ms. Strayer holds an Education Specialist degree in administration from the University of Virginia; a master’s degree in professional studies from George Mason University; and a bachelor’s degree from Radford University. She is licensed by the Virginia Department of Education as a division superintendent and in the areas of administration and supervision PreK-12, theater arts PreK-12, and history and social sciences.
She is a member of the Virginia Association of School Superintendents, AASA – The School Superintendents Association, Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, the Virginia Association for Career and Technical Education, and the Virginia Department of Education Cooperative Learning Committee. She serves on the UVA K12 Advisory Council, Piedmont Governor’s School Board, Smart Beginnings Council, and GO TEC (Great Opportunities in Technology & Engineering Careers) Advisory Board.
