Dr. Quentin R. Johnson was recently appointed to serve as the sixth president of Southside Virginia Community College (SVCC), beginning July 1, 2019. Dr. Johnson is a visionary and strategic servant leader with more than 25 years of senior-level administrative experience. Dr. Johnson has previously served as Provost, Senior Vice President, or Vice President at six (6) post-secondary institutions, including; two (2) comprehensive community colleges, two (2) comprehensive public universities, and two (2) private post-secondary institutions. He has also served as Executive Assistant to the President/Chief of Staff at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES), Assistant to the President & Director of Minority Affairs at Knox College, and as Director of Student Services (Chief Student Affairs and Enrollment Officer) at Ivy Tech Community College of Indiana. Dr. Johnson is a past Board Member for the North Carolina Humanities Council and Leadership North Carolina. He currently serves as Board Chair for the Greater Opportunity Development Center, Inc.
Prior to assuming the presidency at SVCC, Dr. Johnson served as Vice President of Student Support Services at Guilford Technical Community College (GTCC) since 2012. In this role, he led the delivery of comprehensive Enrollment and Student Services on five campuses. Dr. Johnson also had responsibility for the day-to-day operations of two external campuses, the GTCC Greensboro and GTCC High Point Campuses. Dr. Johnson has significant experience managing organizational change through collaborative strategic planning and strategic enrollment management initiatives. In addition, he is passionate about students and student success!
Dr. Johnson has budget management experience totaling 30M+, has secured and managed external funds totaling $3.5M+, and provided services to more than 80,000+ students during his distinguished career. Dr. Johnson has led curriculum development initiatives such as implementing short-term workforce development training courses for Business (Bank One) and Industry (US Steel) at Ivy Tech Community College. In addition, Dr. Johnson introduced the IBM Academic Initiative to Fairmont State University (FSU) and Pierpont Community and Technical College (PCTC), where he collaborated with Academic Deans and Faculty to infuse IBM Z – System Technology into the curriculum at FSU. As a result, several students received confirmed job offers within the 1st year of this innovative workforce development initiative. Dr. Johnson also led the development of 4 credit two-week–summer college-level Physics course for gifted rising high school seniors interested in majoring in pre-med at Knox College.
Dr. Johnson has college/university teaching experience. He has taught Humanities courses at Manchester University, Human Relations courses at Ivy Tech Community College, Leadership Development, First Year Experience, and Human Relations courses at Walsh University. In addition, Dr. Johnson was an Instructor for College for Kids at Knox College. Currently, he is serving on a Doctoral Dissertation Committee at Western Carolina University. He previously served on a Doctoral Dissertation Committee at Morgan State University and as a Dissertation Advisor for a doctoral student at High Point University.
Dr. Johnson earned a B.S Degree in Music Performance and Education from Defiance College, M.A. Degree in College Student Personnel from Bowling Green State University, and Ph.D. in Organizational Leadership (Summa Cum Laude) in May 2010, from the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES). Quentin is a native of Gary, Indiana, and currently resides in South Hill, VA, with his lovely wife, Nettie. The Johnson’s are the proud parents of four children and four beautiful grandchildren.
