Dr. Muriel Ann Brown Mickles currently serves as the Vice President of Academic and Student Affairs at Central Virginia Community College. She has enjoyed a long and rich tenure as an employee of CVCC and held many positions, including Counselor and Dean of Humanities and Social Science, for many years prior to her current appointment in 2015. Dr. Mickles earned an associate degree in Education from CVCC; a bachelor’s degree in Psychology and a master’s degree in Agency Counseling from Lynchburg College; and a Doctor of Education in Administration and Supervision from the University of Virginia (Charlottesville, VA). She is committed to excellence in education and has dedicated her life to helping others to realize their potential and achieve their personal and professional goals.
Dr. Mickles is a member of numerous professional organizations and has held leadership positions on several boards, including but not limited to Interfaith Outreach Association, HumanKind, Alliance for Excellence Regional and Local Executive Boards, Roads to Recovery Executive Board, Central College of Nursing Advisory Board, Lynchburg College School of Education and Human Development Board of Advisors and Virginia Center of Inclusive Communities. In addition, Dr. Mickles readily and frequently shares her expertise through motivational speaking engagements and workshops. She is also a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. and The Links, Incorporated.
Among her numerous awards, Dr. Mickles has been recognized on two separate occasions as the CVCC recipient of the Virginia Community College Association Showcase Award, nominated for Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers, recognized as an Honored Member of Empire’s Who’s Who, received the CVCC Outstanding Employee Award, CVCC Outstanding Administrative Faculty Award, University of Lynchburg J. Edward Petty Outstanding Graduate Alumni Award, and the NAACP Outstanding Citizen of the Community Award. However, she is most proud of the honor of being chosen as the 2009 CVCC Outstanding Alumni and serving as the commencement speaker for May 2009.
Dr. Mickles is married to her husband, George Mickles, and they have three wonderful children, Bethanie, Anna, and Evan. She is an active member of Pleasant Valley Baptist Church where (before COVID-19) she directs and manages the Senior Choir, serves as Sunday School pianist, sings on several choirs, welcomes visitors to the church, serves with the Media Ministry, and takes an active part on many church committees. Her hobbies are many but include travel, reading, singing, and dancing.
Dr. Mickles attributes her success to hard work, endurance, tenacity, and allowing God to direct her path. She recognizes that prayer and support from family and friends make anything possible. The following Bible verse is her favorite and one that she feels exemplifies her personal journey.
